YITA (Deep Water) is the fifth full-length album from San Francisco-based Ivorian-American singer/songwriter Fely Tchaco. The album was conceived as a tribute to the migrants around the world - to those dying in the Mediterranean seas, to victims of human trafficking, and to the victims of modern slave trades. On the title track Fely uses her voice and music to call out for justice for these migrants; and peace for their memories. At the same time the album is a positive, inclusive celebration of cultural diversity and black joy, where Fely uplifts listeners with a powerful vision of immigrant triumph, African excellence, and an affirming message of peace, love, and hope. Whether singing in her native Gouro language, or in Beté, French, or English, Fely’s message and music is universal. The sound of the album is steeped in West African rhythms and leavened with jazz, afro-pop and other urban influences; demonstrating her talent for balancing traditional and modern sounds. Recorded at Jerry Martin Music Studio, and engineered and mixed by Jerry Martin, Yita boasts the talents of several heavy hitters. Jeff Simons adds guitar to “Tile Tete” and “Do Afe”, Abou Diarrassouba plays drums and percussion on all songs except “Cawe Yoko” and “Blamer les Autres” where Jon Kidd adds additional percussion, while Tim Hager adds rock and roll guitar to “Cawe Yoko”. Fely’s boisterous, swooping vocals, and spirited, soulful songcraft ring through loud and clear. Fely has honed her skills as a songwriter since she was a teenage star in Cote d’Ivoire, and it shows. Each song on Yita is an original composition, expressing an amazing variety of rhythms, colors, moods, and styles. This album is made possible through the generosity of the San Francisco Arts Commission Grant Program for Individual Artists. Learn more about Fely Tchaco at www.felymusic.com.
